Here is the thing Google tells you on its own Advanced Search page, and almost nobody notices.

- The Advanced Search form is dated and limited; use operators like before:, wildcard *, AROUND(n), and filetype: for filters the form omits.
- Operators change or retire; some like cache: and link: are dead. Re-test queries regularly and use specialized tools when needed.
Next to every field on that form sits a column headed “To do this in the search box.” Each one shows the operator the form is about to build for you. The Advanced Search page is not a separate search engine. It is a form that writes operator strings on your behalf.

Where to Find It
Google Advanced Search lives at google.com/advanced_search. It is not linked prominently from the results page any more, which is part of why so many people forget it exists.
The form has two sections: Find pages with… for query construction, and Then narrow your results by… for filters.
Every Form Field and Its Operator
This table is the fastest way to make the form obsolete.

Two details worth pulling out.
The exact-phrase field is the single most valuable one. Quotation marks tell Google to return only pages containing that exact sequence — no synonyms, no helpful rephrasing, no silent broadening of your query. Given how aggressively Google now interprets intent, quotes are the main way to make it do what you actually asked.
inanchor: is the hidden gem. The “in links to the page” option maps to an operator most people have never used, matching text in links pointing at a page rather than on the page itself.
Operators the Form Does Not Offer
The form is a subset. These work in the search box only.
before:andafter:— date filtering by publication, e.g.AI regulation after:2026-01-01. More precise than the form’s four preset windows.*wildcard — a placeholder for any word:the best * for beginners.AROUND(n)— proximity search, requiring two terms within n words of each other:climate AROUND(5) policy.|— an alias for OR, shorter to type.define:— dictionary lookups, still functional though simplified over the years.allintitle:— every word must appear in the title, which the form’s title option does not enforce.
That last one has a specific professional use. Running allintitle: on an exact keyword gives a rough read on how many pages are directly targeting it. A very low count often signals a gap worth writing into.
The Form’s Blind Spot
Look at the file type dropdown and you are looking at roughly 2010. It offers Shockwave Flash and Adobe Postscript, formats that are effectively extinct, while omitting plenty of things people actually search for.
The filetype: operator in the search box is not limited to that list. If you want CSV, XML, or another extension, type it directly. The dropdown is a legacy artifact, not a constraint on what Google can filter.
Operators That No Longer Work
Knowing what is dead matters as much as knowing what works, because testing a retired operator wastes time and can produce misleading conclusions.
cache:— removed in early 2024 when Google stopped showing cached pages. Use the Wayback Machine at web.archive.org instead.link:— deprecated in 2017. It may still return something, but only a heavily filtered fraction of actual backlinks. Use Search Console or a dedicated backlink tool.info:— redirected in 2017 to a basic page lookup, and no longer does anything useful.+— the forced-inclusion operator, retired years ago. Use quotation marks.~— the synonym operator, no longer functional.phonebook:,rphonebook:,bphonebook:,blogurl:— all long gone.
related: is genuinely disputed. Sources disagree about whether it still functions, with reports of its removal from Google’s supported-operator documentation. Results have always been inconsistent. Treat it as unreliable rather than dependable.
Counts of working operators vary between guides — roughly 25 is the figure most sources converge on, with differences coming from whether aliases like filetype: and ext: are counted separately.
Combinations Worth Saving
Operators compound. These patterns cover most real research needs.
Find PDFs on government sites: site:.gov filetype:pdf "renewable energy targets"
Check how a competitor covers a topic: site:competitor.com intitle:"pricing"
Find recent coverage only: "EU AI Act" after:2026-06-01 -site:reddit.com
Locate a phrase you half-remember: "the best * for beginners" site:.edu

Build a small library of these in a notes file. Over time a shared operator collection becomes one of the higher-value artifacts a research or SEO team keeps.
The Most Common Mistake
A space after the colon breaks the operator.
site:example.com works. site: example.com does not — Google parses site: as an ordinary keyword and falls back to a normal search. The colon and its value must touch. Most operator names are case-insensitive, so that part is forgiving.
Honest Limitations
- Result counts are estimates. Running the same query twice can return different totals. That is normal behaviour across data centres, not evidence of an indexing problem.
- Operators show structure, not ranking. They tell you what is indexed and how content is organised. They do not explain why anything ranks where it does.
- Results degrade at scale. Deep pagination on operator queries becomes unreliable well before you reach the reported total.
- Behaviour changes without notice. Google has modified or quietly broken operators repeatedly without announcement. Re-test anything you depend on periodically, and treat guides written before 2020 as starting points rather than references.
Do They Work Elsewhere?
Mostly, yes. The core set — site:, intitle:, inurl:, filetype:, exact-phrase quotes, and the minus operator — carries over to Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Brave Search with broadly similar behaviour.
Syntax for the more specialised operators diverges, so verify anything unusual on the engine you are using.
Why This Matters More Now
There is a practical argument for operators that did not exist a few years ago.
Results pages have become denser, with AI-generated summaries and suggested queries occupying the space above organic results. Operators are the most direct way to get past that layer to specific, filtered, verifiable sources — particularly quotation marks, which stop Google from reinterpreting what you asked for.
For anyone doing research where the exact source matters, that is not a power-user trick. It is basic hygiene.
Final Thoughts
Google Advanced Search is a helpful entry point, and if you only search occasionally the form is perfectly good. But it is a wrapper around about a dozen operators, and in several respects a dated one.
Learn the ten or so operators in the table above and you will construct better queries in a fraction of the time, reach filters the form does not offer, and stop wasting keystrokes on commands Google retired years ago.
